UP IN SMOKE

Confronted with a fresh purpose for a prominent corner site in Footscray, the pre-existing incongruent structure cried out for a substantial transformation. Drawing inspiration from the raw elements associated with an industrial environment, particularly those originating from a ‘smoker’—steel, mesh, coal, and timber—placeformspace seized the chance to revitalize the existing building amidst the challenging backdrop of Footscray’s bustling activity, heavy vehicular presence, and persistent noise.

In response, the architectural intervention involved a comprehensive overhaul, effectively reshaping the structure and fortifying it like a resilient steel container. This contemporary design not only enhances the building’s scale but also encases it in a protective armor. The ultimate outcome is a formidable structure that encapsulates a harmonious blend of timber and charcoal interiors, seamlessly marrying industrial toughness with sophisticated aesthetics.
